Upon tooth extraction, dentists may recommend dentures or implants because the neighboring teeth are prone to tilt, making them difficult to clean, leading to tooth decay or periodontal disease in the vicinity. The growth of the upper and lower teeth may interfere with occlusion or even cause temporomandibular joint problems and pain. Long-term use of unilateral chewing, facial muscle overgrowth, and atrophy may also lead to facial asymmetry.

A dental implant is to place a metal post that replaces the root portion of a missing tooth. When the implant is tightly attached to the gum bone, an artificial denture can be fitted. Advantages of implantation include

  • The implants will appear natural close to those of actual teeth
  • Due to the relationship between the base bone and the implant is similar to the actual tooth, it can withstand the same force as the actual tooth and is more stable than conventional dentures
  • Conventional dentures will wear away the neighboring teeth, while implants can completely avoid damaging the structure of the other teeth
